As you may recall, the author—and gifted narrator—of this book is my husband, Ricardo Oliveira. However, given my background in education, he asked me to write this first chapter.
Allow me to introduce myself. I am Lourdes, a first-generation Martian, born in New Recife, Mars, on the 2nd of Centaurus, Mir year 232 (July 1, 2046). My parents, Marco and Izabel Ferreira, were members of the Brazilian Unified Colony, Pedro Álvarez Cabral, which in 2040 established the first permanent settlement on the planet. My father was a life support engineer, and my mother, an educational psychologist, developed the Cognitive Anthropogogy program, which became mandatory for all future Martian settlers.
My childhood unfolded on this harsh frontier that was Mars, where the only thing that kept our sanity intact was precisely the method designed by my mother. Fátima, my older sister, was my role model, and her inseparable friend, Ricardo Oliveira, was the hero of all my childhood dreams. I remember running through the corridors behind them, my golden curls bouncing joyfully, and my large honey-colored eyes trying to decipher the mischief they got into. Truth be told, I think I was in love with him my entire life.
Since a young age, I was drawn to letters and the arts. I began painting using the pigments developed to identify the various life support systems: white water pipes, gray, black, water vapor, oxygen, CO2, methane, nitrogen, electricity, and others. Every time a new installation or maintenance was completed, my father would bring home leftover paint, and I would play with them.
As my artistic skills grew, my mother introduced me to the works of Earth’s great painters and encouraged me to emulate them. Meanwhile, my father and the chemical engineers were creating new pigments and invited me to experiment with them. That’s how I developed my two passions: painting and education.
December 22, 2069
Sol 18, Tucana, Mir 244 (Martian Calendar)
That was the day I married my prince charming. Ricardo stood at the altar in a sharp black tuxedo, looking utterly nervous. He, who had managed to unify electromagnetism and gravitation, one of the brightest minds in the Solar System, seemed like a boy about to flee. Fátima had orchestrated the wedding and perhaps knew Ricardo better than I did. For her, we were the perfect couple, and she didn’t stop smiling all night.
As for me, I couldn’t have been more anxious. Our role was enormous; we were among the first Martians to marry. We didn’t know if Martian offspring would have defects. We didn’t know whether the low gravity we grew up in would alter gestation. On top of that, we had inherited the responsibility to carry on our parents’ legacy and turn Mars into a safe home for our children.
My walk down the aisle was clumsy, my dress bouncing up and down. I felt like a pudding wobbling down a corridor, trembling to the rhythm of the wedding march. I remember New Recife’s Cathedral was beautiful, filled with flowers releasing incredible fragrances. Friends and family were present, and everything passed like a dream. The wedding celebration was modest, but the entire town participated. Everyone contributed with a dish or decoration, turning the event into something like a patronal festival.
Our honeymoon was simple, but incredibly exciting, it was the first time for both of us: we took a shuttle to the Polish colony of Kopernika. The town’s architecture was picturesque, built of Martian adobe under polypropylene domes, a rich blend of traditional and modern design, often featuring dramatic touches with intricate gothic or baroque elements.
An extravagant luxury of the city was the Zakopane hot springs, where locals would gather to relax in the evenings as a ritual. They swore the hot water was a health elixir. After the hot water we went to our room where we played with each other in every possible way. It was an exploration of the body and soul. Ricardo followed my every reaction as if I was part of one of his experiments. I wanted to understand better the man I had married! I had always been attracted to him, but I always thought he was my sisters, imagine the surprise and exhilaration when he chose me over her!
Our trip coincided with a music festival where violin, accordion, and distinctive Polish bagpipes played folk dances like the mazurka, polonaise, krakowiak, kujawiak, and oberek. That’s where we met Aleksandra and Bazyli, two young Polish migrants who were unhappy with life in the colony. They taught us how to dance their music and talked about their experience of leaving Earth. Aleksandra shared her dream of opening a restaurant, and Ricardo invited them to move to New Recife. Although the culture differed from the Brazilian tradition I grew up with, we fell in love with the town’s flavors, music, and charm.
July 20, 2071
Sol 21, Cygnus, Mir 245
That was the most important day of my life, I gave birth to my firstborn, Roberto Oliveira, whom all his friends call Bob. He was a second-generation Martian, a true miracle of nature. My long bones, narrow hips, and the low gravity had not impeded either conception or childbirth.
For Ricardo, Bob became the inspiration to transform his unified theory into a machine for generating variable gravity. His dream was for his children to adapt to Earth’s gravity and perhaps visit it one day. For me, Bob inspired a different dream: to develop the finest educational system to form honorable men and women capable of building a better future for humanity.
Following in my mother’s footsteps, I expanded her methodology and developed what came to be known as Martian Cognitive Anthropogogy (MCA). I implemented it at Escola Brasil, where all my children studied, alongside other notable Martians, like Peter Gorski, son of the Polish migrants who moved to New Recife to open their restaurant.
I became a regular at the restaurant, nostalgic for my honeymoon, and formed a great friendship with Aleksandra, an outstanding cook and nutritionist. I grew fond of her son Peter, a brilliant young man with attention deficit disorder and a passion for geology. He was quite the charmer; most of the girls at school were smitten by him.
I’m proud to have been one of his mentors, to have encouraged Ricardo to offer him a scholarship and later a job, and to have urged Bob to include him in the mission to capture comet Nadeah. I knew his flaws, but I also knew he had a great heart.
Without further delay, let me say this: the love for my husband, my family, and my planet inspired me to write these lines, which serve as the introduction to the story that follows…
June–July, 2116
Pavo and Aquila, Mir 269
While Mars advanced at its own pace, Earth was in chaos. A series of events in New York City led the One World Organization (OWO) to issue an ultimatum against Mars on June 22, 2116 (Sol 26, Pavo, Mir 269). The ultimatum demanded a drastic increase in Martian atmospheric density within just ten Earth years. Otherwise, Mars’ poles would be bombarded with atomic warheads to accelerate the terraforming process.
The atomic threat terrified every Martian, not only because of the radiation’s side effects, but because the dust raised into the atmosphere could obscure the sun and, instead of heating the planet, plunge it into a devastating ice age. At that time, no viable alternatives existed. But two nearly simultaneous events shifted the course.
Comet Nadeah—discovered by my daughter-in-law Layia—was in an extended orbit around the sun and would pass dangerously close to Mars. Close enough that part of its mist would fall onto the planet.
Meanwhile, a young Chinese scientist named Biyu Jiàn demonstrated it was possible to navigate a block of ice using an ion accelerator of her own design. If this technology could somehow redirect the comet’s trajectory, it might deliver all the water needed to thicken the atmosphere, without atomic fallout.
My son Roberto (Bob), then president of the Martian Terraforming Organization (MTO)—a kind of advisory council acting as Mars’ governing body—was faced with an impossible choice: accept the bombardment and its risks, or attempt the unthinkable: capture the comet and integrate it into Mars’ atmosphere.
Bob and Layia proposed guiding the comet with ion thrusters and transforming it into a temporary moon to mine for atmospheric enrichment. The idea seemed far-fetched, but the couple had powerful backing from organizations like Solar-Sail and MGMed, founded by their parents.
On July 1, 2116 (Sol 07, Aquila, Mir 269), Bob convened the brightest minds in the Solar System and passionately unveiled the plan to capture comet Nadeah. The proposal gained institutional support, and an elite team was formed: Bob, Layia, aerospace engineer Ethan Brown, pilot Valery Ivanova, navigator Peter Gorski, propulsion engineer Biyu Jiàn, and an advanced AI system—Annie.
The Comet Surfer, a state-of-the-art spacecraft, was designed with cutting-edge technology. Nadeah, a massive celestial body eclipsing even Phobos, would require colossal engineering feats to redirect. From Earth, the team traveled to Mars and finally to Saturn’s moons, embarking on a journey to the edge of possibility.
Years 2116–2122
Mir 269–272
My in-laws, Amin and Aarya, along with my grandchildren, joined the Comet Surfer team during their year-long prep in the Saturn system. Ricardo and I remained on Mars, he acted as director of MTO, and I managing company and educational operations.
On Titan, the crew bonded, while my grandchildren had an unmatched opportunity to learn from the greatest minds in the Solar System. Days became months of meticulous design and construction for equipment to be deployed in the comet’s harsh conditions.
Amin introduced Rohan and Rahul, my grandsons, to the realities of space mining, giving them firsthand experience. But then, the unthinkable happened: the pirate Bilan kidnapped my grandchildren, jeopardizing the mission. Few on Mars knew, as Valery and her team captured Bilan swiftly. Unbeknownst to many, this incident would prove pivotal to the story that follows.
After the pirate attack, Amin, Aarya, and the children returned to Mars, while the rest of the team landed on Nadeah, where they built a ring-shaped accelerator the size of the comet. Its purpose: to adjust the comet’s orbit using its ion tail as propulsion. Timing was critical, a narrow launch window required precise alignment with Mars. Missing it would mean disaster.
Then came the unthinkable: the comet was teeming with life. The revelation was as shocking as it was undeniable. It could not be ignored. After consulting with the rest of the Solar System, and a heated debate, it was decided that capturing the comet remained a priority, but every effort would be made to collect biological samples.
The extraction mission turned perilous. An accident nearly cost the lives of three crew members, delaying the orbital correction to its final limits.
The correction involved two phases. The first succeeded. But in the second, an unexpected solar flare unleashed a burst of protons that collided with the ion thrust, generating a force ten times stronger than predicted. The result: Nadeah was pushed into a higher orbit, making capture impossible.
The situation seemed hopeless, until Ethan, drawing on his sailing expertise, proposed a maneuver inspired by a sailboat’s tack. The idea was to reposition the ion thruster at the comet’s front and exploit the ascending node, where the comet’s tail would shift, leading its trajectory.
But the attempt went awry. During the maneuver, the ring accelerator, slightly unbalanced, grazed the comet’s surface and crashed into the spacecraft, damaging the stern and destroying the starboard engine. Though orbit could still be corrected, the crew was now trapped on the comet.
With the thruster relocated to the bow, they achieved the impossible: not only did they slow Nadeah, they gained precise control of its path. The wild, unpredictable beast had been tamed.
However, integrating Nadeah into Mars’ atmosphere required multiple passes through its upper layers. With each orbit, friction heat would sublimate comet material, releasing vapor for Mars to capture, thickening the atmosphere. With each pass, Nadeah would loose kinetic energy, approaching a stable circular orbit.
But the heat posed a deadly threat. The crew and ship would be exposed to extreme temperatures. Unless they escaped, they’d perish with the comet.
A plan was needed. With limited resources, they assembled an improvised device dubbed The Unsinkable. With it, they left the comet just in time. A rescue cruiser awaited them—filled with friends and family.
What followed astonished the entire Solar System. As Nadeah neared Mars, its tail wrapped the planet like an ethereal scarf. But instead of stabilizing, the comet shattered into countless pieces. Many merged with the Martian atmosphere. Others, caught by the gravity of Phobos and Deimos, formed a brilliant ring system around the Red Planet.
And it was amid this historic transformation that this new adventure began…
